I love clematis. All kinds of clematis. I especially like Sweet Autumn clematis for its tiny flowers and big show come September – and for its wonderful seed pods that float upon the vine long after the flowers are spent.
These were growing in abundance at Minnehaha Falls Park, and, though past their bloom time, they still held court on and above this arbor where I am sure many weddings take place. A photographer was setting the stage for what appeared to be engagement photos for a young couple while we were there.
Some Sweet Autumn can be vigorous to invasive, so check before you plant one to make sure it meets your needs and area.
Do you have a favorite clematis or vining flower?
Beautiful photos of a beautiful plant. A have a small vine of our native clematis paniculata, it’s not doing very well but has made a lovely wee show. I saw it growing wild high up in the bush on our trip down to Hawera looking like bridal bouquet amongst all of the green. I have many photos of our one that I am going to post in the next few days.

Thank you, Marilyn. I can’t wait to see you photos of clematis paniculata in bloom. I imagine them to be breathtaking on your ride to Hawera. I think this is very similar to the Sweet Autumn here. Clematis can be fussy sometimes, but, is worth the effort.

That clematis is beautiful Penny..perfect for a wedding . My favourite clematis is our native one, because of early memories I’m sure. I love travelling down to Rotorua when it is flowering in the bush along the roadsides.. not flashy, rather shy and special.

I love the descriptor of your clematis as “rather shy and special”. Thank you. That will stay with me and come to mind each time I see Sweet Autumn, which looks quite similar to yours in NZ.

I’m so enjoying seeing your autumn post of clematis, so fluffy and furry and full. Ours has recently flowered, so fresh and white in the dark bush. Across the globe we are in opposite seasons, yet the season of connection is beyond all fluctuations. And we are connected through this wonder of the blog. Thank you.

Isn’t that connection so interesting, Juliet? You blooming spring, we fading into fall, and the lovely clematis putting on a show in both hemispheres, briefly, in sync.

Penny, that clematis is beautiful. One of my dear friends who passed away years ago always had bright purple clematis growing on the posts of her back porch. I loved the flowerey entrance to her friendly kitchen. Every time I see purple clematis, I think of my friend and her back door. Your photos are perfect.

What a lovely way to remember you friend, Janet, each time you see a purple clematis. I love the purple ones. Actually, I haven’t met a clematis I didn’t like. This was such a pretty arbor in the park. I never would have gone there had you not mentioned it last spring. Thank you.
