I’m trying to decide if I want to put a flower or a feather in my hat.
Important decisions such as a these take time, especially if you are someone like me who does not look particularly fetching in a hat. One’s hair must be right and the tilt of the hat just so. The only way a hat’s tilt looks fetching on me is if my head is lilting starboard
Then, there’s the issue of proper attire. Glovesl, jewelry and such. I’ve been rummaging around in the closet to find the proper outfit. No luck finding something as proper as this.
Now, you might ask, what is all this fuss about?
I will tell you.
Our garden club’s meeting is to begin with High Tea. Hats and gloves optional.
Members will be bringing sweets and savouries and we will be having a presentation by a local tea shop, Serene Tea.
My challenge will be to bring members down to earth afterwards for our business meeting (I’m president).
I’m off to bake some cupcakes – and decide if it’s a feather duster or flowerpot that will be my crown.
While I’m tending to that, I’ll pose a challenge. Can you guess who this lady is with plumes on her hat? I’ll give you some clues.
As a girl, she disliked wearing hats.
She lived in cabins, log homes, and even a sod house.
She traveled across the prairies in covered wagons.
I’ll tell you tomorrow, after High Tea.
Of course, I know who the lady is. She had a rocky farm in Mansfield, Mo. I will not mention her name in case some one else wants to guess. Enjoy your High Tea and why not flowers and feathers on that hat? How about white gloves and a little wrist corsage to match the flowers on your hat? Maybe a veil over part of your face to give you that mysterious air would be the thing. Oh, I am getting carried away with myself. Have fun!!!
I love hats, but they don’t love me. They are always too big and come down to my ears. But, in my imagination, I can put a hat on and look quite Jaunty.

I know you know who it is, Janet, and yes she had a rocky farm. The tea will be fun and, at least as of now, it is feathers and flowers. Ha! wrist corsage and veil. Too bad you’re not here or you could come too.
I do, too, but never feel comfortable wearing them, other than sun hats. My sister can wear a hat with style. I’ll wear one and be a good sport and imagine I’m quite jaunty – just like you.

I agree with Janet. She lived in Kansas at one time too. I started to say that I hadn’t owned a hat since the Catholic church relaxed its rules about head covering for women, but I did have one for my son’s wedding in 1999 since my hair was only about an inch long then, growing back after chemo. 🙂 As for gloves, I even hate to wear them when it is cold. I’m still and always will be a tomboy!
Did you know Susan Wittig Albert is writing a book about this person http://susanalbert.typepad.com/lifescapes/ See the Jan 14 entry. It’s in the early stages so will be a couple years before it is out.

You’re on to me, Joyce and know I’ve seen her Kansas house. I’m sure you were radiant for your son’s wedding and looked great in the hat and I hope you continue to do well.
I have a pair of my mother’s gloves, but, I don’t think I’ll wear them. Maybe I’ll bring them with – for effect. It’s too hard to work with them (and eat!).
Interesting. I’ll check the site out. Thanks for letting me know.

Methinks you were too generous with your clues, Penny. I guessed accurately on my first attempt…. 🙂
I love the look of hats on anyone….EXCEPT me. I would opt for floral adornment for a garden club meeting though. Will be interested to learn your final choice. Have fun with it.

And I erased two other clues I had. Next time I’ll hold back. tee hee
I do, too, but never look good in them myself. I’m pretty sure that a flower will be part of it. I really can’t wait to see what these gals do. They are so creative. It is fun, Karen, and what makes live interesting.

Won’t spoil the fun with any more spoilers about the lady in the hat but she must be —-oops!
As for the hat, perhaps you could put together a little fascinator with a small paper plate covered with your favorite flower. I collect hat pins so wish I could loan you one. You must show us the final product.
My delimma, I am embarrased to say, is how to watch the Super Bowl half-time AND Downton this evening. I think Downton will prevail.

Ha! Very funny, Marilyn.
Oh, that fascinator would be great fun, though I’m certain they look better on the younger set.
Hope you got to watch both. Downton was repeated a second time tonight, I’m sure for those trailing in from the Super Bowl. I hope you got to see it, Marilyn. There were some interesting turns and I was touched by the armistice.

Always put a feather in your cap; it has a certain jaunty air to it that would match your humorous stance just perfectly!
I’m sure whatever you choose will be done with flair.

By Jove, I mean Juliet, I think I will. I’ve been practicing in the mirror and now my head has a crick in it. tee hee
Thank you. I’m not so sure about flair, but, I am having fun.

Dear Penny,
I seem to be the only one who doesn’t know who this handsome, regal woman is. Am I being dim-witted or dull?????
I so look forward to finding out two things: what happens at the high tea party and who that woman is. She certainly looks as if she has great strength of character.
Peace.

Not at all, Dee. You just haven’t read my blog long enough to know who it is. I’ll give you another hint. It is a children’s author and she had great strength of character and was, still is, admired by many.

I hope your tea goes well at garden club. With you on charge Penny, I’m sure it will! As for your hat, fill it with flowers, the more the better ! Have fun and take pictures!

It will be fun, Mary Anne, with many women doing the work. I just wield the gavel. My hat will be simple, but, I know some of these gardeners are quite creative and will come up with some fabulous hats. I will take some.

Penny, hats are the bomb. I love them, even ridiculous ones called ‘fascinators.’ When I don one, I feel high, floating.
I’m sure I know who she is, and her hat is lovely. 🙂

Aren’t they, though? I like the fascinators, but, best to leave those to those a few decades younger than me.
I’ll bet you do, too.

I’m with Dee, Penny! I do NOT know and will look forward to the discovery! I love hats, but rarely wear them for formal wear. Mostly garden or cover-up for me, but watching DA and those glorious hats has me yearning for the experience. If you’re willing to pay the price for those gorgeous bonnets I can guarantee you’d look just great! What must they cost?? Still sounds fun! Debra

I’m thinking you might know, Debra, but would not imagine her in this hat a pose. I’m not much of a hat wearer, excepting for in the sun, but, hey, I’m game. I hope you saw Downton tonight – it was on twice here.

OK, my gut instinct was to begin this post by typing in the name of the person in the photo – but then I noticed that everyone else politely left their guess out of their comments. What that says about me, I’m not sure! Anyway, due to peer pressure I’m not including my guess either but I’m pretty sure it is someone you’ve written quite a bit about.
As for hats, I love hats on other people and I love to try them on, but if I buy one I can never bring myself to wear it! I think hats don’t work well on top of my hair.
Your garden club sounds like it must have been a lot of fun today!

It says you are sure of yourself and it would have been fine if you had, Janet. I think you are quite right about someone I’ve written about.
Me too. I’m never quite comfortable in them, but, do wear them in the sun, which is different that for fashion. The one I am wearing was about $10 at Jackson Square Mall. Whattadeal!

I too know who she is and that she knew just what winter could be like. 🙂 DD adored her books and has all of them.
I’m not sure how much use I can be with hat suggestions as I hate them and never wear them, even for weddings, except for warm, knitted ones in cold weather. But flowers for the garden club does sound like a good idea.

Indeed, she did, Perpetua and I am often found re-reading it during a snowstorm. I imagine DD dips into her volumes once in awhile.
This will be a challenge for me as I don’t usually wear hats either, excepting to keep the sun off of my face, but, it will be fun.

Dear Penny,
Okay, Dee again. Is it the author of a series of books that become toward the end of the 20th century a successful television series????????????

I think you’ve figured it out, Dee. Yes, it was a series of books, which are among my favorites, and a successful television series.

I have figured it out, but won’t say since everyone is keeping mum. Will you reveal her name on your next post? I love that your garden club is having a tea. And the hats should make it so elegant. Gardens and tea, how dreamy…

Oh, high tea! What fun! I seem to spend my life at these things insisting on more sandwiches. When they’re tiny finger ones they make about a mouthful. Best to eat before you go 😀
The hat: here we would wear flowers, probably. Feathers are very hunting party….
Whatever you decide, Penny, have the most divine time and have a scone, jam and cream for me.

I’m just home now, Kate, and it was lovely. There were finger sandwiches, and more. Believe me when I say that no one went home hungry today.
I did a flower – and a few feathers, since we have nothing to hunt here. tee hee
I did. Roz. One member, made scones in the wee hours of the morning and the jam and cream was delicious on it. I had so much cream on mine that I think I can say now, in order to justify my gluttony, that I had extra just for you.
