WHAT ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE DO YOU GO TO WHEN YOU WANT TO RELAX? DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE NOOK FOR READING OR DAYDREAMING?
Ah, that changes from season to season, day to day, but my favorite spots for reading and relaxing are
on our red leather coach, a cup of tea and honey nearby, in the livingroom.
It is also the perfect spot for daydreaming. This is the view.
Sometimes, especially on a cold but sunny winter’s day, it is in the library/den, on this chair.
In the heat of summer, this is a cool, comfy spot.
The best reading light in the morning is this corner our bedroom.
How about you? Where do you go in your home to read and daydream?
What lovely glimpses of your home, Penny. Self-indulgently my favourite place for reading is in bed, either before I go to sleep or with my morning tea. During the day, if it’s warm enough, I love to sit in our conservatory, but am more likely to be knitting or chatting than reading. I’m not much of a day-dreamer by nature, but sometimes indulge a little when outside in the garden or somewhere in the countryside.

Actually, it is my favorite spot as well, Perpetua. Oh, a conservatory sounds like such a pleasant spot to read, knit, and chat. I would love that. It is hard not to daydream in a garden and when I think of your lovely view, oh my. I’m daydreaming just thinking about it from here. Enjoy your wonderful countrysides, Perpetua.

I could happily curl up in any of those spots! Loved the home tour! Thanks.

Oh I love that red leather couch! That’s a beautiful spot with a wonderful view! I move around my house for reading purposes depending on the time of day. More and more of my reading is later in the evening, which frequently finds me in bed! Of course, that leads to falling asleep! The trick seems to be finding the best light with the most comfortable chair, and that is a big overstuffed chair in the den. There isn’t much of a view from there–but that may be good. I think if I were in your living room with that beautiful window I’d be tempted to just stare out and look for deer 🙂 Debra

Thank you, Debra. The red couch makes a bit of a statement, that is unless I’m sprawled on it with a book. Reading in bed is the best, isn’t it? Both Tom and I spend a fair amount of time looking out of that window. The deer and birds and sometimes a horse and rider goes by and we are enchanted. Sometimes, on a restless night, I’ll look out the window and see the shadows of the deer wandering and they look so surreal.

Gosh Penny, all of the reading spots in your home look cozy and comfortable and like something out of a magazine. My favorite is that chair in your bedroom as it looks so soft and inviting. Your home is just perfect and I am sure you are proud of it. I mean this as a compliment when I say it looks “lived in”.
My favorite place to read has to be my study where I have 4 groaning bookcases, a desk and credenza along with file cabinets. It is upstairs and the best view is out the window by the computer. The driveway is below. The old hickory tree is visible with a giant squirrel nest. There are many tall pines that sway in the wind. It is not unusual for one or two to fall when they have died and the ground is saturated after a big rain. I recognize the sound now when that happens.
The attraction of this room is the ability to watch The Cats of Lakeview Point, our outside cats. I am looking at the fat ginger cat who nearly died in Nov. next to one of the long-haired white cats with black ears and tail as they nap in the shade.
But this reading room is happily shared with my amputee lap cat and that is where he is as I write. He is a once in a lifetime cat.
And don’t worry about Bourdain. He was a chef in NYC before he got a TV show, No Reservations. He has become a not bad boy since he married and has a little girl. The cookbook is fun though.
Can’t wait to see what’s coming tomorrow!

The bedroom chair is a favorite of mine as well and I do take the “lived in” comment as a compliment, Marilyn, and thank you for it. We’ve a mix and match house of things we love.
The image of your study and that old hickory tree is so enticing and it sounds like a perfect place to “be”, reading and watching The Cats of Lakeview Point. How wondrous that must be watching after them outdoors. I’m most interested in your once in a lifetime cat, who sounds like a perfect companion.
Thanks for clearing up the reputation of chef Bourdain. I must look up that cookbook. You have me very curious, so it is on my never-ending list. Now if I can only remember . . .

These are beautiful spots, Penny. I can just imagine you curling up with a Louisa May Alcott there 🙂
Special places are few and far between in this busy family household…I guess my bedroom would be favourite!

Oh, you know me well, Kate. I have.
How I remember those years of raising our girls. Finding a special place and finding time was often tricky and the bedroom was always the best place to read. This house is wonderful, but big and rambling for just the two of us, so there are enough places for me to curl up in.
Hope that headache has abated.

I love your pictures, Penny. They all look so peaceful and inviting.
I do everything – EVERYTHING – in bed. Write my blog. Read other blogs. Eat. Read. Work. Sleep. Most of my novel was crafted in bed, revised in bed. Etc. Sometimes, I even find time to sleep there, too. 🙂

They are and I thank you, Andra.
I’m glad that you find time to sleep there. I don’t have a laptop or other small computer or I’m sure I’d be working on it in bed as well. You keep up all that good writing wherever it is.

Your home looks so comfortable and friendly. I love that there is always a throw on every place to sit. I love to cuddle under something when I read.
I used to love to read in bed, but having to wear reading glasses has made that difficult because I would fall asleep reading and wake up with a dented head. It is hard on the books as well. My usual place to read is sitting on the love seat in our living room with a big dog on one side and a cat on the back behind my head. Often, my lap is covered with a throw of some kind summer or winter. My all time favorite place to read is on the deck in the morning watching the sun peek up between the trees. In the evening, I like the front porch which faces west so I can see the sunset. Of course, all of this is determined by the weather.

I thank you for that, Janet. I love to cuddle under a blanket too and often need my tootsies tucked in.
I’ve had the same reading problem ever since my cataract surgeries. I always needed glasses but could read without them. I don’t need them in good light, sunlight, reading in the car is a cinch, but, come bedtime . . .
What a cozy picture you paint with the cat in the back and a dog at your side. If I would a painter of pictures, that would be the one I would paint. What wonderful outdoor places for you to read and wonder. Today is a definite reading-inside-sort-of-day, making me want to pull out The House at Pooh Corner.

That sounds like such a good spot spot to have, Juliet. Your very special reading spot. It has only been since we moved here that I have so many spots to read, but the red couch seems to wait for me most days. Thank you.

Dear Penny, . . . when I read I’m almost always in a prone position with my head up on a pillow. I read in bed at night but also on the couch during the day. Often one of the cats lies on my chest as I read so I have a deep sense of security and connectedness. Peace.

That is the best reading position, Dee, and one I often find myself in as well, though not with a cat, I’m sad to say, as I have allergies. Back-in-the-day, when I wasn’t bothered, there was often a cat around to read with. I can certainly understand your feelings, and if the cat is purring as well, ahhhh!

Thank you, Janet. It became “home” pretty quickly. Isn’t it the best couch? I saw it through the window at Plass and admired it for a long, long time. It went on sale just before we moved and was the only piece of new furniture I bought for this house.
