“Yia Yia. What is true love?” . . .
. . . so began our rainy-day morn as we watched Frozen together.
It was a thought-provoking conversation with a lass sixty years younger than I am. Kezzie and I manage to enter in such conversations. I love her curiosity about life, and, in this case, about true love.
We discussed our hearts’ amazing capacity for love. I was settled upon the couch. Kezzie was bouncing with barely contained enthusiasm around the living room; a princess in a pink dress. We discussed who we love and how we love new things while still loving those we already have a heart for – all while she danced and gestured and stepped into the animation on the screen through her own lively imagination; body and soul, my sweet little girl.
We talked about how she loved her Mommy and Daddy and how they loved her and when her little brother was born there was more love to go around. We talked about love of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Then, she pretended to be Elsa from the movie and burst into song, duplicating her actions on screen. Elsa and Kezzie, singing together the song “Let it Go“.
Suddenly, from the Pack ‘n Play, a newly emerging voice shouted out “let go – let go!“
I look forward to more interesting conversations, as time goes by. For now, I’ll just let it go.
True love; it is found in many places; family, friends, pets. It is more, much more, than a kiss from a handsome prince.
What a beautiful story!

Thank you, Jennifer.
She was reminding me of you and your “Annie” phase. Loved both.

I love it – your conversation, her questions and this post! Kezzie is lucky to have such a wise Yia Yia who knows so much about ‘true love’! 🙂
It’s a strange coincidence but just a little while ago on facebook I saw a post about “Frozen” that I think you and Kezzie might enjoy – I hope you don’t mind but I’ll post it here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAJYk1jOhzk

Thank you so much for the link, Janet. I loved it; the children, the choir, and the young girl who sun Let it Go! Oh my! I’m will make sure that Kezzie sees it, and her mommy. (I’m back home).
It is such much fun, Janet, and nice to come to these conversations with the older perspective of a grandmother. Hope to see you sometime soon.

What a beautiful story, children are such a treasure to have around. They do live in the moment .

Thank you, Gerlinde. They are a treasure, indeed, and I, too, live more in the moment around them. Maybe we learn to do that again as we age.
I loved, and have bookmarked, your post with the shitake mushroom salad. Looks fabulous.

Oh, how sweet! I love those princess age conversations. What a joy and how lovely. What a surprise to have a 2 year old chime in. Who would ever have thought that two girls from 6th floor Hamilton Hall would be chatting about delightful grandchildren just a few years later? What fun!

Ha! Last thing those two girls from 6th floor Hamilton were thinking about was grandchildren, but, sure is fun now, isn’t it? Remember acting out scenes from West Side Story in our rooms? Oh well, that’s what comes from eating animal crackers in our soup.
Thanks, Janet; for the nice words and for the memories of younger days. 🙂

A lovely story Penny…but I think I need to hear more about you and Janet acting out scenes from West Side Story!

Life was simpler, in so many ways, once upon a time, and we were two very silly coeds who had a lot of silly fun. Do you want West Side Story – or when we were Texaco Gas pumps? Haha! 🙂
Thanks, Janice.

Penny, this is so heart-warming. These conversations with a young soul are pure gold, aren’t they? It’s as if we return to our own fresh beginnings and discover the world anew.

A perfect set of words to describe these conversations, Juliet. “pure gold” . I think you are right. We do return to our beginnings. It’s fun and enlightening to look at the big and the small through young eyes. Thank you.

I think Kezzie is very fortunate to have such a wise and patient Yia Yia with whom to discuss the big questions of life, Penny. It’s such a privilege to be able to help nurture a child’s enquiring mind. A lovely story.
PS I too wouldn’t mind hearing about the West Side Story scenes…

Penny, I can’t believe how mature Kezzie looks in this picture. Where does time go? What a delightful moment shared between the two of you. It’s a precious memory for you and sets the tone so beautifully for many, many more such intimate conversations. Frozen has been such a phenomena, I wonder if it hasn’t brought other families just a little bit closer sharing the music and the message. Although I think I can sing the soundtrack from beginning to end, I haven’t actually watched the movie yet! I know two little girls who would gladly share it with me! 🙂

Oh, Debra, if you possibly can, do watch the movie with the girls. So much of Frozen is about sisters and it is so much fun to experience through the eyes of children. Kezzie, at 4, is really into it; actions, words, even facial expressions. It was my first time seeing Frozen and I loved it! What really surprised me was Ezra’s chiming in. It also brought to mind how much our Jennifer loved the movie “Annie”, at this age absorbing herself in the character. Actually, she still does love “Annie”.

Such good conversations you two (three almost) are having! I’m one of the few people in the world apparently who haven’t seen this movie … must remedy that when we get back to routine (?) — or whatever passes for that in my life. My yoga class leader (last season in Florida) commented that her grand-daughter was singing a Yoga song from the movie. She reminded us that we were there to ‘let it go’.

I know. Ezra was getting his two cents worth in – and love it as much as the conversation. This was my first time seeing Frozen, Sallie. It was fun seeing with the kids, but, you would enjoy it with whomever might watch it – and just let it go! :I)
