Whilst the Irish Soda Bread was baking and the corned beef dinner was simmering, a few of my favorite Irish films came to mind, and I was wondering what some of your favorite Irish movies might be.
One that always sets me to laughing is Waking Ned Devine
Of course, there is The Quiet Man, which usually shows up in the these parts on St. Patrick’s Day, as it did again this year.
Evelyn is perfect for social justice and protection of children – and a wee bit of angel rays,
and Finian’s Rainbow if just the one for song and dance.
The trailers are from YouTube. A few I couldn’t find but are enjoyable to watch include Da, The Mammy, The Secret of Roan Inish, and Ryan’s Daughter.
While I’m blathering on about movies, I would like to mention the British import , Moone Boy on PBS? Have you watched it?
What are your favorite films of Ireland?
I liked The Commitments, Penny. And I also really enjoyed The Secret of Roan Inish and definitely Waking Ned Devine. After that I am kind of drawing a blank. LOL! I haven’t yet seen Moone Boy, but I still have access to it in archives. It’s just not yet bubbled to the top! We had corned beef and cabbage tonight, but I missed the soda bread! I must remember that next year! (or next week…it sounds so good!) 🙂

For some reason I can’t figure out, I have never seen The Commitments, Debra. I really need to remedy that. I’m so glad you brought it up. One Moone Boy bubbles up, you are in for some quirky fun. I’m sure you corned beef and cabbage were delicious. We’ve just enough left over for me to shred it together for some homemade corned beef hash – then that one’s meal over for another year. 🙂

I’m a big fan of In Bruges and Calvary, both great black comedies! Would you mind if I linked your post to the Ireland month challenge on my blog?

Two I haven’t heard of as yet. Thank you so much for recommending them, and for taking the time to comment. I just read your challenge and browsed your blog a bit, which I will be returning to. 🙂 I don’t mind at all, so, please feel free to link this.

Thanks for all of the great Irish film suggestions, Penny! I will definitely look for them. I have enjoyed ‘The Quiet Man’ and ‘Finian’s Rainbow’ over the years. It’s such fun to watch movies set in faraway places! We laughed though two episodes of ‘Moone Boy.’ So funny!! Have a lovely day! ♡

I watched both yesterday, Dawn, The Quiet Man late last night.
Isn’t Moone Boy fun? We both have had some good laughs watching it as well.
I wish you a lovely day as well. The sun is trying to peek out as I write . . .

I’ve always loved Circle of Friends. It’s an oldie now, but so romantic.

Oh, gosh, Andra, I’d forgotten Circle of Friends. A wonderfully romantic movie. Thanks. 🙂

I love all those movies but most of all, I love “Waking Ned Devine”! Even Eoin enjoyed that one! By the way, there is another one that you might like called “A Shine of Rainbows” with Aidan Quinn. Sure it’s a bit cheesy, but no more than “The Quiet Man” and nobody can deny that is enjoyable to watch! I saw it on Netflix but I think they took it down. It must be available on Amazon.
It sounds like you had a nice St. Paddy’s Day! A friend gave me a loaf of delicious soda bread and I built our Irish dinner from there! Eoin wore a t-shirt to school that said “Made in Ireland”. 🙂

Janet, I start laughing at just the name “Waking Ned Devine”. I can imagine Eoin enjoying it. 🙂
I have seen “A Shine of Rainbows”. Thank you for reminding me of it. It is a bit of a tear jerker, and yes, a bit cheesy, but, I like cheese. Aidan Quinn did several films around the same time, Evelyn being one, that I think he produced as well as had roles in and were set in Ireland.
It was nice. Jennifer and Jason joined us for our meal, which was delicious. Yours sounded good. – but what I love is Eoin’s t-shirt. Did your soda bread have caraway in it?

I was going to make soda bread with caraway but didn’t get around to it and then luckily was surprised by a friend on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day with the gift of the loaf of soda bread that I posted on facebook! No caraway but it was delicious, and best of all signed, sealed and delivered! 🙂

Signed, sealed and delivered is the very best kind, Janet. It looked nicely wrapped as well.

While I like many of those movies you listed, one of my favorites is My Left Foot.
Your Irish Soda bread recipe is still on my to bake list! I’ll bet you can pull this menu off blindfolded by now and that is a good thing.
I will look for Moone Boy as I have missed it.

Marilyn, thank you. I forgot My Left Foot, which is such a good movie.
The soda bread recipe has been around here for some many years and comes from a very dear friend. The meal is a pretty easy one now, just throw it all in the Crock Pot. It was very good – and tomorrow, leftovers will make corned beef hash.
The snow is mostly melted and I’ve seen Midnight roaming about. 🙂
