Dawn had already broken as I padded down the long, narrow staircase to the first floor of our little homestead. Reluctant to climb out of bed, I had fallen asleep long after half past late. I awakened sluggishly, yet, there they were, slipping in through the kitchen door, past the kitchen counter then down the hall, splashing radiant rays of sunshine around our home!
As I stepped onto the last of the steps, the sun kissed the recessed bookcase and danced into the living room, landing on a candle and setting in aflame.
After eight days void of sunshine in a month of unending gray and gloomy skies, the sun was a most welcome visitor and seemed to lighten the heavy load of January in our cold and fickle northern climate.
In the kitchen, I happily discovered that the blooms on the Amaryllis I wrote about in the last post had opened up and greeted the sunshine streaming in.
Today’s sunshine was a ray of happiness here on the Cutoff. How i the weather in your neck of the woods?
Thanks for sharing the photos – very peaceful. We had a slightly snowy day with some sunshine in the middle. It is so welcome after cloudy days.

Such a beautiful post! Love all the shadows in your photos. And the very pretty Amaryllis. Here it’s turned mild and wet, so is a bit dismal, but I don’t mind as I get to sit by the fire and read. 🙂

Thank you, Cath. The shadows are fleeting this time of year, so I tried to catch them while I could. Dismal outside definitely makes for good reading inside. My find of remedy.

Hooray for the sun. I remember the feelings you describe from when we lived in the winter-gray Pacific Northwest. I suppose a case could be made for something being more precious when it is rare. (But right now I am happy with the every-dayl.)

I think we’ve had 25 days without sun in January 😦 and not much snow at all. Just odd for January – and gloomy. I can understand how it must be a hard time of year in the Pacific Northwest. I agree, Sallie. I, too, am happy with the every-day. Thank you.

Fickle, hot, then cool. My daffodils are ready to pop so that is a special time for me. Tell us about the lovely crystal bouquet vase. I will send sun to you!

I am always excited to hear that your daffodils are ready to pop, Marilyn. While we are always a month or so behind, your news gives me hope and makes me eager for spring.
Thank you. I will happily do a little post about the vase one day soon. 🙂

You captured the sunshine with your words and with your photos. It has been sunny and warm here in Northern California. I remember the dark days of January when I was living or visiting Germany during that time.

Thank you, Gerlinde. I’m so happy to know that the sunny and warmth are with you there right now. January set a record here for days without sunshine. I guess we just have to make our own.

Lovely photos and descriptions Penny! There is nothing like sunshine after a long, gray spell to pick a person up! And it doesn’t matter how cold it is outside, sun shining through the window is warm 🙂

Thanks, Janet. The sunshine was, unfortunately, short lived. Here we are in February and still gray and gloomy. 😦 You are so, so right; the sun smiles through cold and even snow.

I can feel the glee with seeing those beautiful sun-rays beaming in and washing your nest with light! I have really enjoyed the rain, as you know, but I have also missed the sunshine. It is quite the energy source and I’m not accustomed to being without it for days on end! I hope there’s an early spring in the midwest, my friend.

Glee. Indeed, Debra, glee. 🙂 I’m actually feeling it now as I read your comment and rejoice in your rain. Finally! I know there are areas where the rain has caused problems, but, the relief from the drought remains a welcome. I think we might just have that early spring. We are already seeing migratory birds and nesting has started for some species.
I hope all is well with you, my friend. Good thoughts coming across the miles.
