The traveling vase has been resurrected!
The vase been sitting on the chifforobe since Christmas, patiently gathering dust. It was last filled with flowers when my daughter, Jennifer, made a festive Christmas floral arrangement.
Last week, my friend Bev shared photos of some clever Easter arrangements using –
wait for it –
jelly Beans and Peeps!
I was up for the challenge.
I already had a bag of jelly beans sitting on a kitchen shelf and Marshmallow Peeps are readily available this time of year. My friend Marilyn suggested placing a jelly jar inside the vase; the jar to hold the flowers and to act as a barrier between the Peeps and Jelly Beans. A jelly jar to keep Peeps in line and hold jelly beans in place!
I ended up putting a shot glass inside the jelly jar to hold some daffodils. Daffodils are toxic to other flowers in an arrangement, but, I knew I wanted to pick some from the garden to add to the spray roses and Hypericum berries I had purchased. Glass inside of glass allowed to use the flowers I chose.
Daffodils are putting on a sustained performance in our garden, now that Spring has finally arrived.
So it is that the traveling vase has once again traded hands, hopping down the bunny trail to Jennifer’s house. Who knows when it will return or what will hold, but, I know it will be special. Very special, indeed.
The story of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Vase begins here.
This arrangement is so beautiful and I love your idea of the traveling vase! What I just cannot figure out though is how you get those Peeps to stay put as you put everything else in!

Thank you, Janet.
I wish I had taken photos as arranged this. There is a smaller, round vase inside the bigger one. The jelly beans went in first, on the bottom, and then the Peeps were squeezed in between the space of the two containers. No water touches them, and there was just enough space in between.

I love it!!! So beautiful and whimsical, Penny. Perfect for the season!
The daffodils are up and waving around my apartment building. I love seeing them this time of year.
Hope you had a lovely Easter.

Thank you, L. Marie. I was looking for a bit of whimsy and happy that you felt it. 🙂
Perfect description! Daffodils waving around. I love that and it is, indeed, what they do.
It was a very lovely Easter. I hope yours was as well. Yesterday (Sunday) was such a perfect weather day!

The traveling vase had all my favorite things from flowers to candies! You and the Easter bunny did a magical job and I love it! I could never have the discipline to do this because I would eat all the candy before I finished it! Good job Penny. Am glad you had a peaceful Easter with good weather. It is hot here already.

I thank you, Marilyn, and am hoping that you had a peaceful Easter as well. I will confess that I am not all that disciplined. The bag of jelly beans was very big! Fortunately, I do not like Peeps. 🙂 Our Jennifer, however, does, and she did justice to those bunnies that were not captured in the vase.
It was hot and very humid on Saturday, but Sunday – ahhh, Sunday was perfect! We are back to gloomy today. Best thoughts and wishes coming your way.

Beautiful arrangement — that jelly jar did double duty — keeping those sassy little peeps in line and keeping the other flowers safe from the daffodils (I’d prefer to imagine that the others are so jealous of the daffodils’ beauty that they just give up when forced to live next to them). Seriously I do love seeing them on blogs or in photos from our daughter — we don’t see my favorite flower here as you know.

Hi, Sallie – and thank you.
Daffodils are certainly the beauty queens in the spring beauty contest and your description is more appropriate in describing springtime relationships. 🙂
If one can say a positive thing about winter and freezing temperatures, it is that they are the perfect conditions for daffodils bulbs to hibernate, multiply, and push forth these beauties. I wish you were here as this year we have had such splendid displays of daffodils.

Thank you, Gerlinde. It was fun to arrange this and now it is in my daughter’s hands. 🙂 Cold and rainy here as well. This has been a rather erratic spring, but, daffodils lift their heads and bring little spots of sunshine. 🙂

Besides enjoying the story of the traveling vase, I learned something, Penny. I didn’t know that daffodils are toxic to other plants. Your arrangement with the Peeps and jelly beans is so delightful! I love your header, too, Penny. I smile the whole time I read your posts. You have a way of sharing your home and hearth that reaches across the many miles!

Oh, Debra, thank you. Your kind ways are a balm to my soul.
Daffodils are toxic to other plants once cut. I forget what the emit, but, they will snuff out other blooms in a vase. The other interesting factoid is that daffodils are a plant that is poisonous to animals. It is the ONE plant that deer won’t eat.
I wish you could see all the swathes of daffodils in bloom right now. Even on our gloomiest days they are bright rays of happiness. 🙂

Thank you, Sharon, and yes, friend’s ideas are the best! This was fun to make. Joan made one, too. I think hers was pink. Jenny actually started the traveling vase last year on Mother’s day.

Good suggestion, Sharon:) Maybe the vase will re-emerge soon…although I’m not nearly as talented or creative to pull off a Peeps-like vase!I just thew it out, by the way, more than a week after Easter!

It was fun to assemble, Melissa. I learn so much from my friends; in this case, my gardening friends. It was from them that I learned about the toxicity of daffodils -and this little trick with Peeps. 🙂 Thank you.

It is! I think part of the fun for both of us is that we never know when the vase will appear.
